Two types of memory use - answering how. Implicit - does not involve effort, it"s automatic, just happens. Declarative - memory for facts and events. Semantic - for facts and the basic meaning of words and concepts, general and generic. Procedural - for how to do things, skills and behaviors. They do cross over, procedural can be explicit or implicit, etc. Encoding - initial processing of info that leads to a representation in memory, the data entry, first step to memory. Storage - retention of encoding over time, clicking the save button. Retrieval - recovery of stored info at a later time, open a few days later. Sensory memory - represents physical features of sensory stimuli for a few seconds or less. Short term memory - includes working memory, has a limited capacity. Working refers to what is going on in short term and involves active processing of info in short term.
