Friendships are VOLUNTARY
Peer: someone similar in power or status to oneself

Waning friendship = Relationship starts to dissolve
Reason 1: Friends grow to dislike each other
Example: Best friends go to different colleges.
Reason 2: Life circumstances can change
Example: Your best friend dates your ex.
Communicating in Romantic Relationships
Romantic relationships differ in how much they emphasize:
Exclusivity = Committing to only that person
Voluntariness = Choosing to be with that person
Love
Sexuality
Permanence
Fitzpatrick differentiates between marital types
Traditional: Tend to go by traditional gender roles (Ex. Grandparents)
Separate: Lead separate roles (Ex. Long distance relationships)
Independent: Both independent and interdependent
