Chapter 2 culture and gender: culture that distinguish one group of people from another. The system of learned and shared symbols , language , values , traditions , and norms. Ethnocentrism - the systematic preference for characteristics of one"s own culture. Not always connected to ethnicity or nationality. Ethnicity - perception of ancestry or heritage. Nationality - status as a citizen of a particular country: co-culture. Groups of people who share values, customs, and norms related to mutual interests or characteristics besides their national citizenship. Can belong to several co-cultures: culture awareness and communication. Awareness is especially important in non-homogenous cultures. Similarity assumption - presumption that most people think the same way we do, without asking ourselves whether that"s true. Lack of eye contact doesn"t always mean people are lying. Your gpa does not define how smart you are: individualistic vs. collectivist. Individualistic culture - emphasizes individuality and responsibility to oneself.
