BIOL 212 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Soft Palate, White Pulp, Adenoid
Document Summary
Lecture #10 - lymphatic system: main function. Re-circulate fluid lost at capillaries back into blood. If fluid is in blood it"s called plasma and if it"s in tissue it"s called interstitial fluid. Able to absorb fats and fat soluble vitamins within lymph. Disruption in re-circulation by lymphatic vessels or nodes of interstitial fluid. Secondary cause - removal of vessels / lymph nodes after cancer. Fluid from tissue builds up and moves into lymphatic capillaries. Fluid in lymphatic capillaries [lymph] moves up one way toward lymphatic vessels. Lymphatic vessels combine to form trunks and trunks combine to form ducts. > lymphatic vessels -> [right or left] lymphatic ducts -> [right or left] subclavian vein. Lymphatic capillaries -> lymphatic vessels -> lymph nodes. > lymphatic vessels -> cysterna chyli -> thoracic duct -> left lymphatic duct -> left subclavian vein: organs of the lymphatic system. Lymphocytes and monocytes in node surveys lymph for invaders or abnormal cells.
