Means of removal varied: voluntary based on mutual agreement, treaties made forceful ejection, and violence. In 1824, john c. calhoun founded office of indian affairs as a division of the us department of war to solve the land problem with 38 treaties with american indian tribes. Indian removal act of 1830 marked the beginning of systematization of a us federal government policy forcibly removing native peoples away from euro-american populated areas. One example: the 5 civilized tribes (cherokee, choctaw,
