General butler was a lawyer from massachusetts who was promoted by president. They came seeking sanctuary at the fort, which was illegal. Fugitive slave act: all slaves needed to be returned to their owners. Shepard mallory: went head to head with butler, intelligent slave. Butler found a legal loophole that gave him the right to con scate the 3 slaves and not return them and the owners. This is known as the beginning of the end.
