Note: see articulatory phonetics notes and slides! Definition: assimilation of poa of a speech sound to that of an adjacent speech sound. Speech production is dynamic articulators are constantly moving and rapidly. Articulation characteristics of a sound vary in connected speech. Sounds are affected by many things rate: pitch, manner (loud/soft/whisper, phonological context local versus nonlocal, within-person variability individual differences. Mondegreen when speech perception is totally wrong (hear something different from what is actually spoken) Example is when you hear a song lyric that is much different from the real lyric.
