Thought to be predominant in western countries. People at most risk are usually in a competitive situation. Belief that their self worth and success are largely determined by the shape of their body. Eating unusually large amount of food in a single sitting. Eating in usually a 2 hour period more than people will eat in a day. Typically dessert/snack foods and high in sugar and fat. Most likely at home, alone, at night, or after unstructured activity. Seen in bulimia, binge-eating disorder, and anorexia. Attempts to compensate for binge eating or prevent weight gain. Dsm-5 criteria (3+): eating rapidly; uncomfortably full; large amounts when not hungry; eating alone due to embarrassment; disgusted/depressed/guilty. Etiology: diet first and binge first. Those who binged first because they usually are binging to manage their negative mood, while those who dieted first were usually trying to lose weight. A lot of overlap between bulimia and anorexia.
