After birth of first child, marked shift toward traditionalism (parental imperative) Parenthood accompanied by decrease in marital satisfaction across age groups, ses groups, and countries: not all new parents show decline, marital friendship related to sustained marital happiness at parenthood onset. Postparental role characterized by change of parental involvement with adult children. Transition more positive than negative for most: men and women become less traditionally gendered. Crossover of gender roles versus expansion of gender roles. Relinquished parental attachment central in individuation-achieving process of late adolescence and early adulthood. Adults substitute symbols of parents and supplement symbolic relationship. Children"s problems primary cause for depressive symptoms for older adults. Problems include children"s divorce, financial crises, and drug or alcohol problems. Successful children did not have the same positive impact on their parents as problem children had in the negative direction (fingerman et al. , 2012).
