Its sympathetic division arouses; its parasympathetic division calms. Sympathetic nervous system: the division of the autonomic nervous system that arouses the body, mobilizing its energy in stressful situations. Parasympathetic nervous system: the division of the autonomic nervous system that calms the body, conserving its energy.
