Document Summary
Create a drawing to illustrate the difference in centromere placement: Morgan received the nobel prize in physiology and medicine for research conducted in his fly lab which demonstrated that the factors of mendel were on the chromosomes. The genetic material contains the codes for creating and maintaining the variety of organisms on earth. Scientist began to look investigate the chromosomes to identify the species-specific chromosome number and to carefully examine individual chromosome features. Chromosomes were isolated from cells and stained with dyes. Each dye produced characteristic bands (extra pigmented areas of chromosomes) unique to each chromosome of a haploid set. Across species of organisms the centromere placement varies with 4 different locations possible along a chromosome metacentric, submetacentric, acrocentric and telocentric. Note that the portion of the chromosome extending from the centromere are referred to as arms. Metacentric chromosomes have the centromere in the middle, thus the arms are equal in size.
