Alcatraz- federal prison in august 1934 and is now considered the first supermax due to its design, location and at the time it held the countries worst criminals. Major criminals included al capone, robert stroud, george kelly and james. Closed in 1963 due to expense in operating facility was replaced by a new facility being construction in marion, illinois the united states penitentiary. It is more expensive to house a supermax inmate because all of the work is outsourced instead of normal prisons. 44 states also operate at least one supermax unit housing over. Solid metal door, a space and a steel bar door (two doors) Stainless steel sink, toliet and polished metal mirror. All water appliances have shutoffs built in to ensure prisoners cannot flood or damage the appliances. Cells have windows that are 4 by 4 ft. but allow you only to see the sky and the roof.
