We usually don"t notice rules of nonverbal communication until there is a violation. We have usual ways of doing things (there are rules for nonverbal communication) Violations of these rules convey messages (we interpret nonverbal communication) Intimate conversations: 0-18 inches apart: haptics: use of touch, conveys power and solidarity (intimacy/love, goffman called them tie signs - shows something about relationship, kinesics: body movements. Eye gaze: use it to express something, regulation interaction: civil inattention (only look at someone long enough to get past them) (goffman"s theory) Emblems: nonverbal signals that have verbal translations: culturally variable. Illustrators: tied directly to words, don"t function without words. Baton signals: mark beat of the talk: emphasize/underscore words. Tie-signs (goffman): gestures through which individuals indicate their relationship. Adaptors: self-adaptor: touching self, other-adaptor: touching others, physique: dress/clothing, pupil dilation, adornment (tattoos), artifacts. Stereotypes associated with body type (somatype: endomorph: heavy-set, mesomorph: in-between, ectomorph: skinny/tall.
