Impersonal: when a persons qualities are irrelevant to a communicative situation. Ex: getting coffee at the same place and getting to know the cashier. Imperfect: people assign different meanings to the same message. Inductive: start with data then try to figure out a theory: deductive: start with a theory and then test it against data, research methods. Chapter 2: culture: attend to personal values---> recognize the impact of your choices on your relationships ---> Individualism: independent and autonomy valued more than the group. High power distance: rely on social situaiton to give messages - symbols. Outcome oriented: value achievement, deadlines and getting the job done. Collectivism: need of the community come before the invidual needs. Low power distance: rely on explicit language to make meaning clear - us language. Process oriented: appreciate the experiences gained by working on a task. Uncertainty avoidant: prefer stable routines that avoid risks or novel experiences.
