Diffusion of free water: water potential, psi, represents the free energy of water, measured relative to reference point. Pure water in container open to atmosphere at sea level. Psi= ompa (megapascals: higher psi more potential e, psi will decrease when solutes are dissolved in water. Solute molecules and ions that happen to be in solution are binding to water molecules ; therefore reducing the movement of water molecules.
