Document Summary
Evolved from an aquatic unicellular, flagellated ancestor. Fungi, animals, and protists form the opisthokonts clade. Animals and fungi may have diverged into separate lineages. Nucleariids: hetero amoebas (protists) ancestors of fungi. Before plants, life on land was green slime made of cyanobacteria, algae, small heterotrophic species including fungi. Do not ingest intact food and digest inside body. Powerful hydrolytic enzymes into food in surrounding medium. Absorb predigested food as small organic molecules. Grow in moist environments don"t grow well in dry environments. Absorb food from cells of living hosts (ex. athlete"s foot) Absorb nutrients from host organism, but reciprocate with actions. Resistant to break down makes them hard to kill. Gram + cell wall made of peptidoglycan. Gram - cell wall is peptidoglycan and lipopolysaccharides. Some species grow as either filaments or yeasts; other grow as both. Tubular chitin cell wall surrounds plasma membrane. Allow fungus to expand into new food sources.
