Ovary: female gonad pair, in pelvic cavity, held by ligaments, produce. Oviducts (fallopian tubes: from uterus to each ovary. Cilia beat and controchins in oviduct. Move secondary oocyte down oviducts: site of fertilization. If no fertilization, then secondary oocyte degenerates in oviduct: cilia move secondary oocyte (fert. Thickens every month in prep for pregnancy. If no fert. occurs, then endometrium gets sloughed off. Menstruation: lower portion of uterus, closes uterus and separates it from vagina, common site of cancer. Vagina: elastic muscular tube, receive penis and sperm. Vulva: external genitalia, covers opening of sex organs (cid:1) Primordial germ cells: in female embryo, diploid, mitosis. No new oogonia formed after birth: mitosis. Arrested at prophase i: diploid cell, at birth. 1-2 million primary oocytes: by sexually maturity. ~200,000 primary oocytes remain: remain dormant until puberty. Between primary oocyte and follicle cells: each month ~6-12 follicles mature. After ~1 week, 1 follicle larger than others and continues to grow: primary oocyte.
