Lecture 15 - reproduction ii: female reproductive system, functions. Ovary - gonads -> house oocytes (egg cells) Oviducts (fallopian tubes) - where 2 oocyte moved by cilia. Oocyte - cell that goes through meiosis to make the egg. Pushes the baby out or causes cramps if the egg has not been fertilized. Cervix - small opening at the bottom of the uterus. In the embryonic ovary: prior to puberty. Primordial germ cells (2n) divide and differentiate to form oogonium (2n) Primary oocytes (2n) begins meiosis and arrests (stops) at prophase i. At birth there are 1-2 million 1 oocytes. Each 1 oocyte is housed within a follicle. 1 oocyte is waiting inside the follicle. Zona pellucida - between 1 oocyte & follicle cells glycoprotein. Each month 6-12 follicles mature but only one will complete the cycle: during and after puberty. 1 2 oocyte (n) starts meiosis and arrests at metaphase ii.
