Document Summary

Unikonta divides into two groups: amoebozoans. Difficult for immune system to recognize because its so similar to us: opisthokonts. Divide into fungi and nucleariids, and animals & relatives. Fungi= one of the first eukaryotes to successfully colonize land. 100,000 species named 5 major groups within the fungi. Cell wall contains chitin (a sugar that maintains its shape and protects it (contains nitrogen)); (some substance in insects, but aren"t related) warm, moist, dark places are wonderful places for them to develop. Fungi can either be: single-cell (yeasts only) or multicellular. In multicellular: mycelium= fungal body; grows in and around food source. Made up of fungal hyphae: hyphae= long branched filaments. They way they digest (externally) is what makes them not an animal. Most hyphae for structure or feeding but can be: Mutualistic (like the haustoria found in mycorrhizae) A single cell- starts a new individual haploid (n) Fungus use different strategies in order to move their spores because they are vulnerable.
