Study of interactions that determine distribution & abundance of individuals & populations in communities. Resource anything from environments that meets needs of a particular species. Limiting resource- in scarce supply: community interactions. Interspecific competition different species: ecological niche: your role in the environment. If an organism"s habitat is it"s address , the niche is the organism"s profession. Niche potentially occupied by that species potential used resources: realized niche. Niche actually occupied by that species resources actually used: fundamental niche & realized niche not same result of competition. 2 identical ecological niches- competing same limiting resources cannot coexist= competitive exclusion: resource partitioning. 2 spp w/ similar fundamental niches but have one or more significant in their niches can coexist partial competitive exclusion= resource partitioning. Characteristic of 2 species more divergent in sympatric populations than in allopatric populations of the same 2 species character displacement: predation.
