Japan in the 1930s: trading modernism for militarism. Modernism and modernization in japan one of the same. Sweeping changes took place, left a lot of traditional ways behind. Cinema and general idea of what 1930s meant in larger historical sense for japan. Sweeping change happening through the 20s into the 30s. Strong national cinema: starting in the early film era, the japanese public supports the local film industry. Strong national cinema within its own borders during the 20s (silent era) By the 30s, studios begin going out of business; as we enter the 30s, the world is undergoing an economic depression only 2 survive. Silent and sound, side by side: even after the industry adopts sound, silent film production continues (as in china, but japan took into the 1940s to finally fully take place) 1931 first sound film production started happening in japan.
