PS 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Object Permanence
Document Summary
Authoritarian: rules of parenting, child will obey them. Permissive: child desires and parent gives back. Thought and action are virtually identical, as the infant explores the world with its senses and behaviors; object permanence develops; the child is completely egocentric. Symbolic thought develops; object permanence is firmly established; the child cannot coordinate different physical attributes of an object or different perspectives. The child is able to perform reversible mental operations on representations of objects; understanding of conservation develops; the child can apply logic to concrete situations. The adolescent (or adult) can apply logic more abstractly; hypothetical thinking develops. Piaget"s theory: he believed that children construct their understanding from interactions with the world and experience which is followed by greater stability as they move from one cognitive development to the next. Language development: best period to learn language is birth to 3 years. Need to hear sounds of language very early.
