NUR 324 Lecture 9: Management of Patients with Complications from Heart Disease
Document Summary
Management of patients with complications from heart disease. Cardiac resynchronization therapy (crt) change of the conduction of the heart. Ejection fraction the amount of blood that actually goes through aortic valve when the left ventricle contracts. Orthopnea difficulty breathing when lying flat (measured by number of pillows needed to sleep) Paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea (pnd) difficulty breathing at night. Pericardiocentesis removes fluid from around the heart. Right sided heart failure (right ventricular failure) related to copd, effects the pumping of blood to the lungs. Impaired contracture: systolic dysfunction (left or right ventricle doesn"t contract enough) Increased blood volume puts stress on heart muscle causing ventricular hypertrophy and strain on ef: effect of this cascade of events is called the (cid:862)vicious cycle(cid:863) of hf. Clinical manifestations s/s of congestion s/s of poor perfusion. Assessment & diagnostic findings: echocardiogram, chest x ray, ecg see effect on conduction, blood work: electrolytes (sodium); bun (kidney function); liver test (hepatomegaly); cbc, cardiac catheterization; cardiac stress test.
