1. What are Intergovernmental Organizations? Who do they represent? What role(s) do they
play in international environmental governance?
a. Organization composed of sovereign states, or other intergovernmental
organizations.
b. Main purpose: A way for world’s inhabitants to work better together on peace and
security, and deal with economic and social questions. When interdependence and
globalization are growing, IGO’s are increasingly more important.
c. Example: The United Nations, WHO
2. What are Nongovernmental Organizations? Who do they represent? What role(s) do they
play in international environmental governance?
a. Agitators and conscience keepers who raise awareness of environmental
problems, and solutions for IGOs
b. Membership consistents of citizens, trade unions, churches, etc.
c. Mobilize around different issues for political change
d. Example: Red Cross
3. What are the different types of NGOs?
a. Human Rights NGOs: Focus on human rights abuses and try to advocate for
human rights, typically immediate relief
b. Development NGOs: Provide aid to support social, economic, and environmental
development of developing countries.
c. Environment NGOs: Focus on improving the state of the natural environment
