Document Summary

Lecture notes chapter 5 demographic changes in the us. Browning means that the population is not white. Graying means that the population is getting older. Us population in 2015 = 320 million: northeast = 56 million, midwest = 68 million, south = 121 million, west = 76 million. Availability of clean water is not available everywhere: some of that water is then used for irrigation for crops. Fertility rates have been relatively stable, but there has been a decline in death rate. Food is less of an issue for the growing world population because we can now grow multiple crops in one place (we have more food than we can consume in the world: but the distribution is the problem. The government does more for the people"s health and education in european countries than in the us. What should be the us"s response to the world population growth: volunteer organizations provide birth control, but the us can"t really do this.
