Blame to the disabled person: represents evil. Disability is a medical problem that resides within the individual: an impairment, a deficit. Goals for intervention: cure pathology, ameliorate the physical condition, rehabilitate. Role of the pwd is passive patient. Disability is a social and civil construction. Learned social role: not a direct result of a medical condition. Handicaps exist out in society and not within the person (environment is the problem) No academic field of expertise (disability studies is developing) Denied rights, equal access, and protection because pwd are in a minority group. Impediments: unequal treatment, social isolation, prejudice and discrimination, economic dependence. Disability is an inability to perform socially valued roles (work) Origins and values in traditional and religious systems.
