Document Summary

Are comprised of a metal (transition metal) and ligands. Each bond is comprised of one electron from each atom. The ligand is a lewis base (electron pair donor) The metal is a transition metal; its s, p, and d orbitals accept the pair. The metal can be neutral or have a charge. The overall complex can be neutral or charged. Bidentate ligands: ligand bonds to the metal through 2 atoms. Polydentate ligands: ligand bonds to the metal through 3+ atoms. Polydentate ligands: called chelating agents (chele = claw ) If there is more than one ligand, list in alphabetical order. Use prefixes to indicate the number of each ligand. If the ligand"s name has a prefix in it (as in ethylenediamine), use these prefixes: Similar to the octet rule, 18 electrons seems to be more stable metal complexes. A metal uses its s, p, and d orbitals for electrons (9 total orbitals)
