Document Summary

Societal norms and pressures do not accept people as they are. People perceive restrictions on the choices they can make. Our closeness w/ others often depends on what we do. Or how we change ourselves to fit in. Encourage people to recognize and experience their true feelings. Through acceptance & non-judgment from the therapist, clients can come to accept themselves. Believed humans were inherently good and everyone had great potential. Focuses on forming close, meaningful, accepting bonds in the relationship b/w therapist & client to make change. Nonjudgmental acceptance and support of a person regardless of what the person says/does. The therapist never tells the client what to do, but only helps the client process their feelings and come to conclusions on their own. Humanistic therapists reveal personal experiences and feelings to help clients better understand themselves. Ex: a therapist had an affair to help client understand. A therapist"s caring, concern, and respect for individuals are important.
