*infants prefer looking at a happy face rather than a sad/ambiguous face. Six universal facial emotions (emotions babies can interpret): happy, fear, surprise, sad, anger, disgust. Babies can understand these right away (1) universal (evolutionary old/not culturally bound) (2) present from birth (must be important) (3) reliable and valid way of interpreting intentions of others. First signs of emotion (that babies can show themselves): Crying hunger, anger, frustration, and pain. By 6 mos of age: presentation by baby of universal emotions in place self-conscious vs. self-awareness: Self-conscious emotions: emotions, such as embarrassment, empathy, and envy, that depend on self-awareness. Usually develop once you can interact with other people. Self-awareness: realization that one"s existence and functioning are separate from those of other people and things. A cognitive understanding of: a recognizable and separate identity from rest of world. Beginning of empathy and moving away from egocentrism (toward allocentrism) Theory of mind: awareness and understanding of mental processes in others.
