Support self-efficacy: to make the difficult changes, client has to believe that change is possible, pre-therapy, counselor will focus on skills and strengths that have led to a success in the past. Roll with resistance: counselor avoids resistance by avoiding negative interactions, counselors are careful, do not impose on the client"s way of thinking. Develop discrepancy: motivation to change occurs when client sees a conflict in, where they are now, where they want to be. Oars: way to remember the approach used in mi, 1) open-ended questions, 2) affirmations, build their confidence, do not focus on flaws and negatives, 3) reflections, 4) summaries. Dsm criteria for substance dependence: substance dependence = addiction, 1) tolerance, goes up, 2) withdrawal. Important aspects of working with individuals suffering from addiction: relapse, mandated vs. voluntary, lying. All important factors of all therapy: trust, tasks and goals, therapeutic alliance, ethical considerations, culture.
