Document Summary

Biol 230w lecture 25 carbohydrate metabolism. We are going to focus on metabolism of glucose. Sources, storage, and release of glucose varies in different organisms. Plants: autotrophs, produce own glucose, stored as starch or cellulose, glucose released from starch when energy is needed, gluconeogenesis: convert other molecules of glucose. New synthesis of glucose : heterotrophs, must consume glucose, glycogenesis: glucose stored as glycogen. Synthesis of glycogen : lipogenesis: glucose stored as fats. Carbohydrate acetyl coa lipid: glycogenolysis: break down glycogen when energy is needed, gluconeogenesis: convert other molecules to glucose. High blood glucose level: release insulin, promotes uptake of glucose by cells that need it (muscle fats) Low blood sugar: glucagon release, glucose release and production. Steps 1, 3, and 10 have negative delta g values: occur spontaneously. Net gain of 2 atp molecules: 4 molecules output, 2 molecules input. Net gain of 2 nadh + h+ Nad: nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, accept h nadh + h+
