Document Summary

Atavism: throwback" human traits i. e. deviant people are more like primitive humans. Even though these early themes have been generally disproven, we still research brain function, physiology, and response. Nature/nurture looking at parent and child deviance. A certain amount of deviance is required for society to stay in step. Merton"s strain theory: increase in the gap between goals and means leads to increase in deviance. Conformist: buys into the cultural goals and uses legitimate means to get them. Innovator: buys into the cultural goals but does not use legitimate means. Ritualism: doesn"t buy into the goals but buys into the motion. Retreatism: withdraw from cultural goals and legitimate means. Rebellion: has their own goals and their own means. Ex: someone who works every day but knows they will never be rich. Those without strong social bonds don"t fear social consequences of deviance. Deviance higher in societies where there are large gaps between earnings and enticed necessities".
