Will change the orientation of russia from the east to the west: called westernization. His goal is to make russia a great power: military, political, cultural. Influenced by his mother natalia: raised in the polish manner, educated, wore western european clothing, had more freedom. Grew up in a suburb in moscow: immigrant community. At this time russia know little about western europe. When he is born it is unlikey that he will become tsar: has a older brother he dies, also has a sister. Skilled and aggressive with policy and power: allegedly plans attack on peter. Peter gets help from the church: him and middle brother become co-tsars. About a decade into his reign he goes on the first trip to western europe: not gonna go as the the official tsar. Wants to know about their politics and military. Works as ship builder in the dutch republic: merchant navy. Goes to england: will visit the ship yards.
