Document Summary
Age ranges toddlers are children aged 1 and 3 years. Young toddlers may also be referred to as babies. First words typically develops around 12 months of age. True word marks the transition from preverbal to verbal mode of communication. 3 characteristics of a true word: usually used to refer to people/objects, has to have a recognizable pronunciation, has to be used consistently across different settings. Phonetically consistent forms (pcfs) these refer to the idiosyncratic word like productions that do not approximate adult forms, but are used by children in a consistent and meaningful manner. These words are not considered to be true words because they are not meeting all 3 features. However, they are important language milestones and they consist of specific sound structures. Gestures toddlers use a lot of gestures to show what they are talking about. Younger toddlers use a combination of gestures and verbal production while older toddlers tend to predominantly use words.
