Uses of speech audiometry: measurement of threshold for speech, cross-check of pure tone sensitivity, quantification of suprathreshold speech-recognition ability, assistance in differential diagnosis, assessment of auditory processing ability, estimation of communication function. In this case, srt is often significantly better than pta. Speech recognition: srt looks at the lowest level a person can understand speech, whereas suprathreshold measures (cid:523)word recognition(cid:524) provides an estimate of the patient"s, word recognition used to be called (cid:498)word discrimination(cid:499). The term (cid:498)discrim(cid:499) is ability to recognize speech at a variety of levels such as conversational speech. still occasionally used but is inaccurate: abnormal word recognition is often due to cochlear or retrocochlear disorder. Speech audiometry materials: continuous discourse: running speech, such as a talker reading a story, used primarily as background competition. May provide too much redundancy: phoneme: smallest distinctive class of sounds in a language. May provide too little redundancy: materials include nonsense syllables, one syllable words, two syllable words, sentential approximations, and sentences.
