Deviance is the behavior that violates the norms of a social group. Behaviors only become deviant when members of a society de ne them as deviant. Stigma: negative label the can spoil a persons identity (go man) Any attribute that either discredits or disquali es a person from full social acceptance. Abominations of the body: tattoos, piercings, physical deformities. Blemishes of individual character: deviant personality traits, rude, arrogance, addiction, mental illness. Tribal stigma: stigma of group identity or towards a group of people (often based on race, ethnicity, religion) Ascribed: born into it (race, social class, age, sex) Achieved: something you do (committing crime, abusing drugs/alcohol, getting tats and piecings) Create an explanation for why they are di erent from us or their inferiority. Discredited identity: stigma that is visible or known. Can often prevent individuals from not being deviant. They will attempt to hide their deviant attributes.
