Patient hm: separate implicit (non-declarative) and explicit (declarative) memory systems. Patient lp: semantic and episodic memory appear to be functionally and neurologically distinct. Equipotentiality: brain areas are equipotential -- each area participates a little in every function, and all functions are spread over the brain. Brain lesions and sections at diverse locations. Iv= how much tissue was removed and where the tissue was taken from. It made little difference where the lesion was, just how much tissue was damaged. Left hemisphere damage -> language deficits (e. g broca"s, The mind is composed of independent, closed, domain-specific processing modules. Modules are like software installed on a computer. Both positions - distributionists & localists- are correct to an extent. Memories are distributed across thousands of synapses and multiple brain areas, but not equipotentially throughout the brain. Memory involves networks of different brain regions, and each region makes a unique contribution. Orchestra analogy (raichle) - all musicians play together.
