Document Summary
Learning/memory, pattern recognition, attention, imagery, language (perception and production), thinking, decision making, problem solving, creativity. Point-of-view about how to study mental processes. A reaction to behaviorism"s denial of mental processes. Behaviorism did not look to understand mental processes, just what could be observed. 5) some history of the cognitive revolution. Cognitive approach became more popular in the 1970s (in america) while behaviorist approach declined. Transferred and worked w/ wilhelm von bunsen. Was his own research subject on effects of restricted salt intake on urine composition. Structuralism: goal was to determine the elements or structure of conscious experience. Analogous to chem"s search for the building blocks of compounds. Lab was not physiology, chem, biology, etc, but his was the first psych lab! What are the component parts of thought? = structuralism. Not just a casual thinking, it was rigorous and full of training. Self-reports are hard for others to verify, more subjective. Reaction times and word association are more objective.
