1718 new orleans founded by the french mississippi company and named for the. 1762 ceded to the spanish empire in the treaty of paris, which ended the seven years. 1800 briefly returns to french control. 1803 napoleon sells new orleans to the us as part of the louisiana purchase. Americans, french, creoles, and africans come to the city, german and italian immigrants arrive later. A marketplace in the treme neighborhood just north of the french quarter. From 1740s onward, slaves, free blacks, and other people of color gathered to trade/socialize on sundays. African music, dancing, and drumming allowed to continue here. Composer louis gottschalk influenced by rhythms and melodies. Reconstruction after the civil war ends in 1865. Congress tries to figure out how to reincorporate southern states into the union and how to treat former confederates. Emergence of black brass bands during reconstruction due to changing social dynamics.
