Document Summary

Light that is reflected off object"s surface. Luster determines how a gem reflects light. Angle of incidence = angle of reflection. Angle is measured from the normal: normal line is the line drawn perpendicular to the surface of the gem. Some light is reflected: angle of incidence = angle of reflection, reflection control luster. Some light is refracted: light is bent by substance, light changed direction because it changes speed. Enters the gem, moves slower once it is actually in the gem. The density of the gem is higher than the density of air which causes the light to move slower inside the gem: angle of incidence angle of refraction. Angle of incidence > angle of refraction: refraction controls color and sparkle. How much the light is bent is different for each material: optical property, refractive index (ri) Ratio of speed of light in the materials (ri) Light changes speed at an interface: light changes angle because it changes speed.
