Nonverbal communication :the process of one person creating meaning in the mind of another person through nonverbal behaviors. Intentional or unintentional transmission of messages thru physical or environmental cues. Channels of nonverbal communication: kinesics: movements of the body- gestures, orientation of body during convo, posture. Gestures: emblem: gesture that represents a specific verbal meaning. Ex: peace sign which everyone knows as peace: illustrator: movement that accepts a verbal message. Ex: giving direcitons, you talk and point too: regulator: gesture that controls the exchange of convo turns. Gestures that we engage in for psychological or physical purposes. Facial expressions: movement of facial muscles like smiling: eye behavior: movement of the eyes like looking, gazing, and eye contact, haptics: touching behavior, like shaking hands, hugging, kissing, touching your own body. Paralinguistics: also called vocalics. characteristics of the voice like tone, rate, pitch. Includes need for personal space, territoriality and arrangement of objects in space.
