COMM 1100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Expectancy Violations Theory, Proxemics, Public Space
Document Summary
Majority of interpersonal theories so far have focused on the formation and maintenance of relationships. Other theories focus on different aspects affecting relationships. Problems arising which cause instability in existing relationships. How these manifest; how these are navigated. Expectancy violation theory is such theory: focuses in large part on non-verbal expectations. Proposed in 1970s, but draws on earlier theory. Proxemics: study of personal space: public distance: 10 feet or farther, social distance: 4 feet-10 feet, personal distance: 18 inches-4 feet. These proxemics are tempered by several factors: gender, social power, cultural norms. Expectancy violation theory proposed by judee burgoon in late 70s. Has developed in iterations over the years. Focuses on navigation of personal space: personal space: volumes of space surrounding an individual that defines that individuals preferred distance from others. We have threat thresholds: the boundary at which uninvited reaches cause discomfort: initially fight & flight; later arousal.
