Document Summary
A way of understanding the natural world. The scienti c method is cyclic: observe a pattern in nature, based on observations (and/or previous data), develop a hypothesis, test the hypothesis experimentally, draw conclusions from data collected. Thursday, august 28, 2014: given the new data (and observations), develop new hypotheses. Many disciplines within the biological sciences: based on the kind of organism studied (zoology, mycology, based on the level of organizations studied (cellular/molecular biology, population biology, based on the process or pattern studied (genetics, ecology (species interactions)) Characteristics of life/living organisms: cellular structure, complex, hierarchical organization, use energy, reproduce, control internal environment (within boundaries, interact with external environment. The cell: a collection of molecules; base unit for life. Organism: collection of organ systems; unit of natural selection. Population: collection of organisms of the same type; unit of evolution. The theory of evolution is a framework for biological investigation.
