Many messages are missed: in one ear and out the other. Hearing: hearing physiological sensory process, listening psychological process. For you to care what they are saying. For you to care and appreciate what is being said. Want your heart and mind to be there. You show this with your body: posture of involvement. Says i am comfortable with you but i also sense the importance of what you are saying. Speaker has listeners on the edge of their seats when she has them enthralled. Indifference is shown when we don"t face people squarely. Keep appropriate distance/space from speaker: appropriate body motion. Good listeners move in response to the speaker. Ineffective listeners move their bodies in response to something else. Avoid distracting motions (fiddling, shifting weight, crossing and uncrossing legs, swinging legs : eye contact. Enables speaker to appraise the listener"s receptiveness. Allows listener to receive nonverbal messages from speaker.
