Document Summary

James garfield was the half-breed nominee for republican party during the election. Stalwarts and the half-breeds were fighting over the control of the republican party and wanting a larger portion of the patronage, hayes"s presidency was terrible. However, since the republicans wanted to hold the presidency after hayes, they included a stalwart, and a half-breed. This was to help the republican situation and make sure that the republicans wouldn"t split up. The president was james garfield and the vice president was chester author. He started to make a civil service reform. Due to his acts, garfield had faced consequences when he was shot twice by a stalwart who wanted arthur to be president. Because of garfield"s assassination, arthur wanted to reform, and kept a lot of garfield"s men: sherman anti-trust act. The sherman anti-trust act was passed on july 1890. The reason that the act was passed is that people wanted to stop trust from corporations.
