Document Summary

The sand creek massacre occurred with the conflict of the indian tribes the arapaho and the cheyenne with the white miners that inhabited that area. Groups of indians hit the stagecoach lines and areas of white settlements so that they could take back the lost land that they had once had. In response to the attack, the white people called the territory militia to take care of the situation, and the army issued threats to the indians. The governor told all the friendly indians to go to army posts for protection, before the army began the campaign. A band led by black kettle camped near fort lyon in 1864 and they had no intention of fighting but the voluntary militia force was drunk and they attacked the camp. Black kettle was the only person who escaped the sand creek. The battle of little bighorn was one of the most famous conflicts between the indians and the whites.
