WMNS 1103 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Illegal Immigration, Immigration Enforcement, Moral Agency
Document Summary
The ethic of community and incorporating undocumented immigrant concerns into ethical. One of the few rights undocumented immigrants have is their eligibility to access a free, public k-12 education- granted through plyer v doe. in 1982, not the constitution. In the u. s. public k-12 schools, one million children do not have legal status. 4. 5 million children, or 7% of all school-aged children, have at least one unauthorized parent. Inherent and ominous risk of deportation: if immigration enforcement occurs within a community, it can complicate educators" ability to maintain a school environment conducive to learning. When ice is present, it can affect a child"s receptivity to learning, her short term academic performance, and access to schooling. Educators have to prepare for situations where the parent of a child is detained and/or deported. There have been incidents where schools complicated student"s access to school by instilling fear in families with attempts to collect information about a family"s legal status.
