Continuing from spotlight metaphor and the zoom lens metaphor. Honing our attention on a specific thing and we may miss something if our attention is zoomed out . Look if target letter is an s or c. The c in circle a can mess one"s attention. Incompatible noise letter (distractors) interfered with participants" responses in the entire circular display and slow down responses. Compatible noise letter that was the same as the underlined target area letter allowed the participants" responses to be faster. Compatible letter farther away still led to faster responses but not as much. Participants told to be fixated at one point and tell whether there was a circle in the boxes. Stimulus onset asynchrony (soa): time between two stimuli. Large boxes that participants needed more time to zoom in to the red circle. Effect of box size only happened for slower soa. People had time to prepare for their responses.
