Deliberately creates brain pathways because kids can"t create them from environment. Begins early as possible- intensity of 25-40 hours a week. Paraprofessionals may be used: speech/language therapy. Often taught other forms of communication, ex sign language. May also use augmentative communication systems ex communication board with pictures and symbols: parent training. Individual therapy and support groups: community integration. Greater number of group homes, or sheltered workshops. Primary difference between this and autism is lack of delay or impairment- don"t have language problems: signi cant impairment in social interaction, can"t get social cues ex. gestures. Treatment focuses on social skills because they can"t just absorb this info. Affects 3% of worldwide population; higher rates seen in low-income countries. Characterized by below average intellectual functioning along with de cits in functioning in at least 1 additional area.
