PSYC 2306 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Acid Erosion, Puffy Amiyumi, Dissociative Disorder
Document Summary
Guest lecture: the role of pth in treatment of bone loss in anorexia nervosa. Dsm-v criteria for anorexia nervosa: restriction of energy intake, intense fear of weight gain, disturbance in how body is experienced. Long term recovery rate is only 50% Medical complications: mortality, anemia, leukopenia, hyponatremia, hyperkalemia, bradycardia, hypotension, hypothermia, osteoporosis, osteopenia. Normal bone remodeling: bone resorption bone formation. Uncoupling of bone resorption and formation leads to increased bone breakdown due to low estrogen levels. Decreased formation is caused by low androgen levels, hyper cortisol, mechanical effects, low igf-1 levels. Pth: anabolic treatment- once daily injections stimulate bone formation, increased in bone mineral density in spine and post-menopausal women. Study population: women with anorexia and osteoporosis, ages 35-70. Primary endpoint: changes in markers of bone turnover. Needed 7 patients in each group to detect a change: 21 women in total.
